A GOOD EXAMPLE OF MODERNIST ARCHITECTURE

The picture above is of the Automotive Life Insurance Building built in 1963 and designed by the firm of Curtis and Davis.  The building is located at 4140 Canal Street in New Orleans, and is presently vacant.  What is unique about this Modernist styled building is that the design doesn’t completely reject the past.  The building is designed on a strict 12 foot square module, with slender pre cast concrete cruciform shaped columns.  The roof structure above is supported is concealed by cement plaster groin vaults.   Yes! Plaster groin vaults on a Modernist Building!!
